THERAPY doesn’t work! Or do they? 1.Impatience If you cannot lose 5kg in 1 day, why would you expect to see results in 1 session? You would need a few weeks/month to see results. It also takes time to get a diagnosis and there can be overlapping issues (comorbidity). Therapy is like going to the gym. It would be best if you had time to train your mind to act differently. 2. No Self-Reflection/Refuse to do Homework If you believe that nothing is wrong with you though the entire world is telling you that your actions are wrong, you will always come up with 99 reasons to justify there is nothing wrong with you/doesn’t need fixing. Nobody is going to do the work for you, you got to get up and take action yourself. 3.No chemistry with the therapist I was a salesperson for many years in my past life in advertising/media/marketing. I was responsible for training salespeople. The rule of thumb with sales is that PEOPLE don’t buy a product. PEOPLE BUY PEOPLE. Sometimes, it is not the therapy itself. Sometimes it is your feelings towards the practitioner or environment where the treatment took place. If you don’t resonate with a therapist keep searching until you find one that you like and can open yourself up to. Sometimes its the culture – you can express yourself better in English, Malay, Chinese, Tamil Maybe it’s the Gender – you prefer a female therapist because you are wanting to share female-related issues and find that another female would relate better. Sometimes it is just a difference in personality – I am a type A no-nonsense coach and most high-achievers like CEOs like my straight-to-the-point style. My sharp tongue may hurt people who are emotional and sensitive to my nature even though my intentions are good and I want to tell them the truth 4. Wrong therapy style – need another method We are all born different and we are all multi-faceted human beings. Just because a method work for someone does not mean that it will work for us. For example, a lot of mental health practitioners encourage meditation and mindfulness but if you have a fear of quiet places or being alone, then you would probably need to find another method that works for you. 5.Believe system – Not Ready/does not believe in therapy Therapy won’t work if you don’t want it to work. Therapy will work when you want it to work – SIMPLE. Even if you do know that you have a problem/issue, but you don’t believe in going for therapy, ultimately, nobody can force you to do something you don’t want.
